FEA Exams

Written Exam

Length of examination: 90 minutes

Examination structure:

  • Open-book, but usually minimal time to look at notes
  • Exam offered online between the hours of 7 a.m. Atlantic time to 8 p.m. Pacific time
  • 25 multiple choice questions (50%) – 2 points each
  • 9 short answer questions (45%) – 5 points each
  • 1 short essay question (5%) – 5 points

Minimum passing grade: 70%

Only candidates who pass the written examination can appear in the oral assessment and therefore a minimum three week period is required between the two exams.

Oral Exam

Length of examination: allow for 3 hours

Assessment Structure:

  • Group interview (90 minutes): assessed with 3 other candidates, but assessed individually
  • One-on-one interview (15 minutes)

Candidates must attain a minimum 70% to pass and gain the FEA designation

Exam Policies


You may schedule exam dates once your application form has been submitted. To schedule written and oral exams, contact Renee Nelson (1.866.849.0099 ext. 260).


The fee for the FEA Certification process for 2018 cohorts sitting the exams in 2019 is $750 plus taxes. The fee is subject to change by FEX.

Re-sitting Exams

In the event a candidate does not pass the written they may re-sit the exam up to 3 times at no extra charge. In the event a candidate does not pass the oral exam they may re-sit the exam up to 3 times at a cost of $300, $400 & $500 respectively. Please note that there needs to be a minimum of 4 available candidates in order for FEX to schedule an oral exam.

Written and Oral Examination Deferment

Candidates scheduled for a written exam may request deferment for a future date as long as a three week period remains between the written and oral exam. Candidates who wish to request a deferment for the oral assessment may do so no later than 30 days before the scheduled test date. A deferment is possible only if space is available and is at the discretion of FEX. All oral deferment requests must be made in writing to FEX and will only be considered if all fees have been paid. Written and Oral Test Cancellation Policy Refunds will be given for cancellations received in writing no later than 30 days before the written test date subject to an administration fee of $100 (plus applicable taxes). Cancellations received in writing no later than 30 days before the test date will be issued a full credit on account to be applied to another offering within one calendar year. No refunds or credits will be provided for cancellations received less than 30 days before the test date. Non-attendance will incur the full test fee. Should the FEX need to cancel or postpone a test date, candidates will be issued a full refund.
